Hubby and I had the vacation of a lifetime in August. 10 magnificent days in Costa Rica.
We filled the trip with tons of hiking, zip lining, canyoneering and deep sea fishing. And we also ate a ton of amazing costa rican food and drinks. Did you know that Costa Rica has their own liquor made from sugar cane? No? Me either until this trip.
According to wikipedia: “Cacique Guaro is a sugar cane liquor of high purity and is the best selling distilled spirit in Costa Rica. It is known as “Costa Rica liqueur”. As it has a neutral taste, guaro can be consumed pure or combined with any natural or artificial mixing.”
Cacique Guaro was the key ingredient in most of the (many) beverages that Matt and I consumed during our trip. Each resort that we stayed at had their own specialty cocktail utilizing cacique guaro, but my favorite was the Pura Vida. The Pura Vida mixes cacique liquor with orange juice and pineapple juice and adds a shot of grenadine for color and flavor. Seriously, you cannot go wrong with this combination!
So, mix it up and enjoy! I know that hubby and I will be enjoying these quite frequently until we are lucky enough to make our way back to Costa Rica.
- 1 oz Cacique liquor
- 1 oz triple sec
- 2 oz pineapple juice
- 2 oz orange juice
- 1 oz grenadine
- lime to garnish
- Pour cacique, triple sec, pineapple juice, and orange juice into cocktail shaker.
- Fill cocktail shaker two-thirds with ice. Shake to combine well.
- Place new ice into class of your choosing. Strain contents of shaker into glass.
- Garnish with lime wedge.
Note: I bought my Cacique Guaro at the duty-free shop at the Costa Rica airport. I’ve heard rumor that this liquor can be hard to find in the US, so feel free to sub out the Cacique for white rum if neccessary.
